any tips for gold prospecting for beginners?
We are just retiring and are thinking of taking up gold prospecting, does anyone have any tips on which detectors to use, where to go, or any help or advice would be appriciated.
Having done enough to make money at it, (found and sold several small “placer” claims in 1 area to a larger company to do the real work of getting the gold out).
1. Gold prospecting does NOT require a metal detector. (For most “placer” finds they would NOT show anything. They are primarily for finding a “concentrated” amount like coins, etc.)
2. Placer is easier to find and work than Hard Rock, just usually wetter.
3. Unless you are real lucky, it would be more a hobby than a job, and is “labor intensive”.
1. Try researching the library for areas that gold has been found in, and procedures for getting it.
2. Try “panning” streams in those areas on PUBLIC PROPERTY, like national parks, etc. NOTE: Mining claims MAY exist on public property that is open for OTHER uses. Be SURE you don’t search on someone elses claim!
3. BEFORE “working” an area, be sure that you have the owners permission if it is private property.
4. There is some special equipment available that allows you to work in even dessert areas easily, as well as “float” gear for use on SLOW MOVING rivers and/or lake bottoms.
5. The basic equipment for “placer” is a small shovel, and a gold pan, (I have even used a 9″ pie plate.) Something to put your “findings” in. (I used mercury to “pick up” the fine gold “dust” and separated it later, but this is a chemical process that can be dangerous until you learn how.)
6. IF you find a good strike, be sure to file the claim! NOTE: In some areas, like some lakes, you can not file claims on the lake bottom, and if you can, someone else has probably already done so if there is any REASONABLE amount of gold there!!
I have found gold in waters in California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and Arizona; and dessert areas in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Most the time it was not enough for “commercial” recovery, but the camping was fun anyway.
