Is it better to use a spray bottle or a watering can to water plants?
When I’m watering my indoor plants, I find it less messy to use a spray bottle, but I’m not sure that this is giving the plants sufficient water. The plants are all doing well, but I’m still back and forth on pouring or spray water.
I’m still confused- seems like people have different opinions on the topic!
Everyone who has answered so far has part of the answer right. Here’s some more thoughts:
1. Misting is fine for most houseplants – It provides moisture and creates a little more humidity around the plant which most houseplants – tropical themselves – like. It is not a bad idea to make sure that the soil in which the plant is potted stays moist. If you can do this by misting you are fine. To test whether the soil is moist enough, you need a sophisticated moisture meter – your finger. Stick it in the soil. If the soil is moist you are doing fine.
2. The exception is a plant with a “Fuzzy” leaf. Plants like African Violets do not like moistrue on their leaves, but do like to have moist – but not wet – soil in which to grow. Again, use that sophisticated water tester to check periodically.
3. Finally there is a category of houseplants called bromileads which have a center core or “cup” which needs to have water in it almost constantly for the plants to thrive. You can put water in by spraying or by watering. Again use your “Hydrological Digit” to check the soil too. Bromeliads don’t need a wet soil.
From your note it sounds like your plants are doing fine…don’t sweat it, just use your finger.
And you though houseplants would be easy!
