Why do my large gold fish keep chewing on the others?
I have had the same gold fish in the tank for 5 years and they are very large, their all orange with short fin’s, but in the past 5 mo. one of them has turned all white, and now the other’s have been chewing on his fin’s,and I feed them 4 time’s a day and enough for them to be full. why is this happening?
By feeding them four times a day you are adding too much food to the tank and and a lot is probably going uneaten. Given most people already have a smaller size tank for gold fish,(My guess you have a 20-30 gallon tank for five that are probably five-six inches long?) it sounds like you have an ammonia spike. An Ammonia spike comes from excess ammonia in the tank from the breakdown of the extra food and the increased amount of poop coming from the over feeding. Ammonia spikes sometimes causes fin rot in fishes and that sounds like what you have. The other fish, as a defense mechanism, are trying to kill the one fish so he doesn’t attract bigger fish to come and eat him.
This can be easily fixed with a 30% water change and some Stress-Zyme ( Made by API ). The water change will take out the ammonia and the Stress-Zyme will add beneficial bacteria and aloe vera to the water to help you sick fishy heal. Also cut down feeding the fish to twice a day. You can however feed them oranges and collard greens if you want to give them a snack
