Tattoo artists don’t just draw things up from their imagination. All of that flash that you see on the wall of a tattoo shop, that was all drawn from observation.

Eventually, people get so experienced with drawing a certain object that they can do it from their minds. But drawings ALWAYS look better from observation.

Some things you can do to improve your art:

Blind Contour Drawings- A lot of art students don’t understand the significance of a blind contour drawing, but teachers love them. The way you do a blind contour drawing is you stare at an object and try to draw it without looking at the paper. You also shouldn’t take the pen/pencil off of the paper. This seems really silly, and the finished product will probably end up looking really silly too. But repeatedly doing blind contour studies helps to improve the connection between your hand and eye. Because after all, the way to get a really realistic picture is to draw with your hand exactly what you are seeing with your eyes.

Mass Drawing- Set up a still life. It can be anything… your dog, some apples, a pile of shoes, etc… Take some vine charcoal, and start your drawing by just observing the overall shape that the objects in the still life make. Shade in the rough shape that the objects make. Fill it in completely. Then, go in with an eraser and erase out the highlights. Now go in and press harder with the charcoal to fill in darker areas. This exercise is important because it forces you to observe the SHAPES in a drawing. Because when it comes down to it, things in real life don’t have outlines, or any lines at all!! A big mistake a lot of people make is putting outlines on everything. Even when an object (such as a leaf for example) has lines on it, they are just very very skinny rectangles. Shapes. Not lines.

Read- Reading books about drawing can help your skills a lot! You can even go on Amazon.com and look at books that let you preview the first 5 pages or so, and even take some ideas from just those first 5 pages! Be careful though. Not every author is right. Sometimes you might find that a certain thing just doesn’t make sense to you.

I know you are trying to achieve a certain “style” with the tattoos, but it is important to be able to perfect drawing realistically first, and then go into the stylized types of art. Everything looks better when you have a sturdy foundation in realistic drawing. Even things like sculpture and photography. Hope this helps!
