How to get stained wood to accept stain after sanding filled nail holes?
I pre-stained some oak wood planks, then made some stair treads out of them. I installed the treads, filled the nail holes with putty that accepts stain, sanded off the excess putty, and then tried to re-stain the light spots where I sanded the nail holes. Those areas will not accept stain. I cleaned the wood with mineral spirits, to no avail. Help!
Let the stain sit longer–when you first applied it, the dry wood readily took the stain. But you’re now trying to get stain into wood that’s partially wet, for lack of a better term. It’s not soaking up the stain like it did before, but let it sit and it will penetrate.
