What are some good decoration ideas for an orange cake?

I’m making an orange cake with a basic orange flavoured icing for a friend. I was wondering what to decorate it with though? Last time i tried to put some fresh orange slices on top, but they made the icing runny. I have lots of oranges to use up, so what could i make out of them for decoration for my cake?

If you want to decorate it with orange-type decorations I would recommend the candy orange slices (the gummy ones). Maybe put some gummy lime slices too…some gumdrops?
If you wanted to you could candy some orange zest and sprinkle that around the edges or you could press some into the sides.

Red Vines candy could be pulled apart and made into decorative swirls on the top and sides.

I definitely encourage the gummy and colorful candies.

If you have a lot of oranges to use up, consider making a fresh orange filling by spreading a layer of whipped cream onto the bottom layer (pipe on a high edge of whipped cream around it to keep the oranges in the center and not spilling through the sides of the finished cake). Freeze the whole thing to firm up the whipped cream.
Peel and section the oranges and place them neatly to cover the whipped cream.
Spread another layer of whipped cream on top then add the next layer of cake and quickly frost the whole thing.
Refrigerate it to keep it firm.

(If you plan on candying the zest, be sure to zest the oranges before totally peeling)
