Pet mouse needs a nail trim?

My pet mouse has 2 toenails on her back feet that are so long that they have completely curled under. It doesn’t look like it’s affecting her and she doesn’t seem to get them caught on anything, but it still makes me nervous. However I don’t know if, or how, I should go about trimming them. I don’t want to risk hurting her, because her feet and legs are so tiny I’m afraid I’ll end up breaking them. Any tips?

If she is tame enough to let you hold her, you can try to file them down with an emery board. Just go slow, allowing her to walk on your lap and when she is still for a moment gently hold her foot and make a few passes with the file. If she moves or struggles, let her go and wait until she has settled again. It may take a while, but it is the safest and most stress-free method I have found for nail trimming rodents. I normally use a baby nail clipper on my rats but with a mouse it may be too dangerous. If the nails are curled under, though, they could pose a problem and should definitely be trimmed. You could probably nick them off with a nail clipper if you went very slow and were careful not to hit her quick or her toe. You can also try to trim them when she is climbing the bars, as their toes usually stick out of the bars. Give her a treat or something to make her climb the bars and see if you can clip her nails as she climbs. Mouse legs do break easily, but not as easily as you would think (I had to do it once for a biology lab and it took more strength than I would have guessed), so don’t be too worried about it unless you are being particularly rough!
