What is a french-style keys and pointed arms flute and whats so good about it?
I am buying a proffesional flute and the one i like comes in either french style keys and pointed arms or without them. There is a $1000 dollar difference!
can someone explain the quality difference?
A french style flute means that it has 5 keys with open holes (a hole in the middle of the key), and this encourages proper finger placement and also helps with the tone quality and sound in general. There will be a quicker response. Also, by getting the open holes, you can end up doing some more advanced flute techniques in music, like bending the pitch since you can cover part of the hole. I have an open holed flute and I love, love, love it. If you’re not used to open holes, don’t worry, because the manufacturer sends you plugs for the holes, and you just take them out as your posture and finger placement gets better.
Pointed arms keys is the style of the key. Here is a picture of a closed hole flute with pointed arms: http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/musicalwheel/FluteAltoSSP2.jpg.
(By the way, the other type is Y-arms.) SUPPOSEDLY pointed gives better support on the key so it doesn’t bend — but as long as you’re buying a flute from a good company, I really don’t think it matters. If it does give more support, I believe it is a very, very small amount more. I don’t have pointed arms on my flute, and my flute still does fine. Also, having pointed arms on a flute usually means more money since there’s more clean-up after soldering. My own flute teacher said it was mostly for decoration.
Good luck buying! Also, some companies might allow you to try them out before you buy them, so that’s a good tip. Choose one that’s comfortable!
