In Rock Tumbling, what is the coarse grit made out of?
Is there a commonly available, household type of material that can be used?
Tumbler grit is carbarundum(SP?), and the polish is titanium oxide, so no there isn’t anything laying around the house that will double for this. Remember a tumbler does in 3 weeks what it takes a mighty river years to accomplish, and that’s take a rough stone and make it round and smooth. I have re-used grit by keeping it in a very clean mayonaise jar with some of the water. Mix it with some new stuff and that saves $ and stretches hard to find grit.
